Case against contractor after six-year-old boy drowns in pit outside railway station

A six-year-old boy allegedly died by drowning after he fell in a pit outside Mankhurd railway station on Sunday afternoon, the police said.

The Vashi Government railway police have registered a case of negligence against the contractor.

According to the police officials, the deceased has been identified as Aayush Rajesh Shegokar and he stayed with his family at Mahatma Phule Nagar in Mankhurd.

The police said that at around 11.30pm, he was playing outside the railway station during which they suspect that he fell into the pit which was filled with water.

Senior police inspector Sambhaji Katare said, “A passenger initially noticed that he had fallen in the water. He went to rescue the child and got him out of the pit. In the meantime somebody had alerted us, so as soon as our personnel reached the spot, he handed him over to us and left.”

The personnel from Vashi GRP then took the six-year-old to Shatabdi hospital where he was declared dead during treatment.

Katare further added, “Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd. is conducting some construction work there for which they have dug up a nine feet hole.” The police said that water got accumulated in the pit due to which the boy couldn’t see it clearly and fell inside, dying due to drowning.

“We are trying to understand whether there were more children playing along with him when the incident took place,” Katare said.
On the basis of the complaint lodged by the family of the minor, the Vashi GRP has registered a case of negligence against the contractor.
