The Honda car that hit a constable near Milan Subway on Tuesday had fake licence plates, revealed officials of the Santacruz police.

Traffic constable Kisan Darade (39) was grievously injured on Tuesday night when a speeding Honda car hit him. Darade was on duty with his colleague Dinesh Avhad (40) when the accident took place. Avhad had signaled the driver to stop but the car sped past him hitting Darade.

“We believe that the driver of the car might have been a criminal or might be carrying incriminating items in the car which made him panic and flee when the traffic policemen tried to stop him,” said a Santacruz police official.

The constable is being treated at the Nanavati Hospital and is in a critical condition, said the police.

Avhad, the prime witness in the case, has said in his statement to the police that the car came at a high speed from the Vile Parle side of S V Road. A doctor who was passing by had rushed the constable to the hospital, said senior police Inspector Madhukar Chaudhari from the Santacruz police.
