The Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) has launched a massive campaign titled ‘Where are we heading?’ to sensitise youths in campuses across Maharashtra to ensure communal harmony.

The ten-day campaign, which started on October 1, will see lectures, seminars and other activities across schools and colleges in Maharashtra with an objective to educate the young generation on keeping calm amid provocations.

Asef Qureshi, Campus and Expansion secretary of the SIO in south Maharashtra, said, “There are rampant cases of communal disharmony in various parts of the state. In most cases, we see youngsters involved in acts of violence. This campaign’s title is to acknowledge the current situation and encourage youngsters to take action in changing this scenario.”

The campaign will include reaching out to 100 school and college campuses across south Maharashtra. This includes, Marathwada region covering districts like Aurangabad, Parbhani, Latur, Beed, Osmanabad, Nanded, Hingoli and Jalna; Konkan region which includes Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurga, and parts of west Maharashtra such as Pune, Ahmednagar, Kolhapur among others.

Apart from lectures and seminars, meetings will be held with local administrations at 350 locations to start channels of mutual dialogue among the youth of the locality.

Quereshi explained, “The idea is to go beyond sensitisation by creating new platforms or forums of youngsters from their respective localities who can take charge of ensuring communal harmony in tense situations. These groups will have direct connection with the younger generation; thus, making it easier to invoke effective communication channels to question provocative thoughts spread by a few from any religious backgrounds.”

“According to the national crime report bureau, in the year 2021, a total of 378 incidents were recorded in the country of which 77 occurred in the state of Maharashtra which is the highest after Jharkhand which recorded 100 cases,” states the pamphlets distributed by the SIO members in different campuses.
