Campus Talk: Amid a wait for CET results, BMS students anxious as admissions begin for degree courses at Mumbai colleges

Like all other professional courses, it was made mandatory to conduct the CET for admissions to the BMS course and the Maharashtra CET Cell held its first-ever BMS CET in May.

Over 55,000 students who appeared for the first-ever Common Entrance Test (CET) held for admission to Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) in Maharashtra are now in a fix. While degree admissions have started for all other courses at the colleges in Mumbai, students who had appeared for the CET exam are still awaiting their results.

Admission to the BMS course until last year was based on a regular Class XII score, like other conventional course admissions. But considering that it is a professional course, the BMS was brought under the purview of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) from 2024. Subsequently, like all other professional courses, it was made mandatory to conduct the CET for admissions to the BMS course and the Maharashtra CET Cell held its first ever BMS CET in May.

Changing course name to come out of AICTE purview

In order to continue the same course in its existing structure but without requirement of the AICTE approval, many city colleges changed the nomenclature of the course to B Com (Management Studies). These colleges have begun admissions last week, along with regular degree admissions.

But a few Mumbai colleges are continuing with the BMS course, stating that it is a popular course among students and has good recognition in the industry. But now, all these colleges are waiting for clarity on the admission process.

‘Asking them to wait for clarity’

The popular R A Podar College for Commerce and Economics is one among those few colleges who have decided to go ahead with BMS course. Principal of the College, Dr Shobna Vasudevan, said, “Students seeking admission to the BMS course have started inquiring about admissions. But we are asking them to wait for clarity.”

According to the students, if they wait for clarity, they are likely to miss out on the alternative. One of the students said, “If I am unable to secure a seat in a good college for BMS, I want to take admission for B Com (Management Studies). But this cannot be decided if two admissions are not running simultaneously. If I wait for BMS admission, I will miss out on the B Com (Management Studies) course and vice-versa.”

What CET Cell says

The CET Cell has not issued any declaration on the BMS-CET result as yet. “The result will be out soon. We are currently in the process of registering colleges for the Common Admission Process (CAP) to be held by the CET Cell for admission to BMS courses,” said an official.

Meanwhile, the lack of clarity has led to rumours. In a clarification issued on Monday evening, the CET Cell has stated that there is no additional CET for BMS admission. Urging students and parents to be cautious, the notice issued by the CET Cell states, “A wrong information is circulated that there will be an additional CET for BMS on June 20th. This is only a rumour, please do not believe such rumours.”
