Pre-monsoon micro-tunnelling work for efficient rainwater discharge at Mumbai’s Borivali railway station caused cable damage, leading to the disruption of the Western Railway’s suburban services on Monday. Commuters experienced a harrowing start to the week, with heavy rushes reported at other stations as well.

Railway officials stated that approximately 110 trains originate from the Borivali station daily. Due to the cable disruption, 48 pairs of train services have been cancelled, including 25 originating from Borivali. The damage affected four crossovers and four signals, leading to the cancellation of many services despite ongoing operations.

Divisional Railway Manager Niraj Verma said that restoration work was in progress, with four crossovers and three signals already repaired, adding that the contractors would be penalised for the damage after the restoration work.

Meanwhile, the Central Railway’s suburban services faced delays due to signalling and telecommunication issues. Despite completing a special block at the CSMT and Thane stations on Sunday, services were still affected on Monday.

The delay in the Western Railway services led to overcrowding at stations on
the elevated Metro lines 2A and 7. The Borivali, Kurar and Rashtriya Udyan metro stations experienced significant passenger increases.

In response, extra metro services have been introduced, with four additional train sets added to Metro lines 2A and 7. These additional services will continue until the situation normalises, supplementing the 21 train sets that typically operate during peak hours.
