President of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Sharad Pawar has shot a letter to Union Minister for Minority Affairs Smriti Irani urging her to bring the amount charged from individuals undertaking the Haj pilgrimage at the embarkment points in Aurangabad and Nagpur at par with the fee charged in Mumbai.
The Union Ministry of Minority Affairs has identified 22 airports in India as embarkment points for Haj pilgrims. Aurangabad in Maharashtra is one of the embarkment points selected by the Haj Committee.
Pawar said, “I would like to bring to your attention that there is a lot of discrepency in the amount payable by the Haj pilgrims for Haj 1444 (H) 2023 at these embarkation points. It puts heavy burden on the Haj pilgrims, especially from underdeveloped areas of Marathwada and other rural areas of Maharashtra.”
The NCP president took up the issue with Irani following complaints received by party leaders in Marathwada region.
According to Pawar, “At the Aurangabad EP, the amount payable is higher by about Rs 88,000 than the Mumbai EP. The Haj pilgrims from entire Marathwada region have raised their voice against these charges and have requested to bring at par with the charges at Mumbai EP.”
The NCP president requested the Centre to ensure charges payable at the Aurangabad and Nagpur embarkment points are brought at par with the fee charged from Haj pilgrims at the Mumbai embarkment point.
