(Express photo by Narendra Vaskar) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to deploy nearly 10,000 staffers on the final day of immersion on Juhu and Chowpatty beaches to ensure that the immersion of idols is done safely. Alongside this, it is set to have 71 control rooms in different parts of the city to track real-time situation on the ground.
The ten-day long festival started on September 19 on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi and will end on September 28, on the day of Anant Chaturdashi. The final immersion of idols will take place on this day, owing to which the Juhu and Girgaon beaches record huge influx of devotees.
This year, on the final day, the BMC will keep 188 artificial lakes operational along with 68 natural lakes in which immersion of idols will be taken up. Keeping in mind the several drowning incidents reported during the monsoon, the civic body has also deployed 46 rafts at Juhu and Girgaon Chowpatty on Anant Chaturdashi as a precautionary measure.
Besides this, the civic body has also set up 1,083 floodlights and 27 searchlights in collaboration with Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) corporation to ensure there’s enough visibility during the night. The BMC has also set up 121 mobile toilets this year to serve the local people.
It is pertinent to note that this year the BMC has recorded a significant jump in the immersion of idols carried out in artificial lakes. On the first day of immersion, the BMC recorded a 15% jump in immersions at artificial lakes compared to last year, while after the fifth day of the festival, the civic body recorded a 173% jump in the immersion number at artificial lakes.
