Ahead of Ganeshotsav, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is slated to undertake a drive to fix potholes across the city as Mumbai receives heavy influx of vehicles including processions of Ganesh idols, in a bid to facilitate smooth festivities. Seeking to repair the potholes, civic engineers –- on Thursday were directed to fill in the potholes and additional officers have been instructed to be deployed on ground to increase vigilance.

On Thursday, Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) convened a meeting with the engineers from the civic roads department wherein officials were directed to fix all potholes ahead of Ganeshotav, which is slated to commence on September 7, this year. With the use of mastic asphalt to fix the potholes yielding positive response for the municipal body, Bangar instructed officials to stick to the mastic method for the upcoming drive.

“It should be ensured that mastic cookers are available in wards and are in good condition. Special attention to be given to contractors to ensure production and availability of mastic supply,” Bangar told engineers.

Data furnished by the civic body shows that the BMC recorded 16,162 potholes in the city and suburbs between June 1 and August 14, of which the civic authorities have fixed 16,005 potholes. Of these, 42 per cent are reported in the two highways in Mumbai, with 3,400 potholes being reported in the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) and 3,386 potholes being reported in the Western Express Highway (WEH).

To tackle the complaints pertaining to potholes, in each of the city’s 227 municipal wards, the BMC has deployed one sub-engineer to supervise the pothole filling work that is being done by the contractors. Besides this, ahead of monsoon, the BMC also appointed 18 contractors to fix potholes during the rainy season across all the 24 municipal wards.

During the course of the meeting on Thursday, Bangar said that assistant engineers along with executive and deputy chief engineers must also be present on field to ensure that all the pothole-prone roads are inspected and fixed ahead of Ganesh festivities.
