BMC seeks 6 months to revise Development Plant

In April, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had asked BMC to revise the earlier blueprint which had received criticism from citizens.

After a four-month extension to revise the controversial draft development plan (DP) it had drawn up for the city for the next two decades, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has demanded another six months to complete the process. According to officials, the administration will put forth a proposal before the general body meeting next week, following which it will be sent to the State government for approval.

A senior civic official from the Municipal Commissioner’s office said, “Considering the complex procedure, we have put forth a proposal for an extension. We will then forward it to the State government in another week.” The general body meeting is a monthly meeting bringing all the 227 corporators of the city under one-roof.

BMC appointed senior IAS official Ramanath Jha to head the DP team. A month ago, BMC had also appointed urban planners for each ward to rectify the land-use errors and work along with the ward officials to rectify the plan.

Urban planning experts welcomed the move anticipating a better 20-year plan for the city. Pankaj Joshi, executive director of the Urban Design Research Institute, a collective body of town planners, said, “I think it is a good move. Instead of working in a short time-frame, the corporation can utilise time and resources to provide a foolproof plan for the city. The citizens are ultimately concerned with the results.”
