The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is expecting to earn over Rs 20 lakh from the goods it has seized from unauthorised hawkers. The civic body had conducted a massive drive against illegal hawkers in the past week. We have taken action against over 1,100 hawkers in the city in the past few days, said D S Kharat,License Superintendent, BMC. According to officials, the goods seized include food items, clothes, accessories and electronic goods. We are hoping to recover money from these hawkers as redemption fees when they come to collect their goods, said Kharat. The worth of goods seized is Rs 19-20 lakh approximately, according to an official. Many hawkers keep avoiding the officials and somehow escape our eye, said an official. These massive raids are done occasionally to target such hawkers, he added.
