BMC sets 53-day deadline to complete new Carnac Bridge, targets June 10 opening

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a 53-day deadline for completing the Carnac Bridge, targeting its opening by June 10.
The bridge is being rebuilt after it was pulled down in 2022 following a structural audit that found several portions of the bridge corroded. The razed structure was 154 years old and it took the authorities four days to pull it down entirely.
The new bridge, which is being built at a cost of Rs 55 crore, is 70 metres long with the girders weighing around 550 metric tonnes each.
At present, work on the asphalt roads is underway, which the BMC aiming to complete the work by June 5. Installation of iron beams are likely to begin from April 27. Civic officials said the pre-fabricated beams are being transported from Daman and will be installed in the next one month.
As the bridge passes above railway tracks as well as populated areas, launching of girders was carried out jointly by the BMC and Central Railway (CR) in February last year.
“Instead of partially opening it, the entire bridge will be opened at one go. The new bridge will decongest traffic in South Mumbai and bring relief for motorists,” an official said.
