A 23-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife at their Bhandup residence on Wednesday morning. Police said the accused, Rahul Mayure, alias Amar, suspected that his wife Shivani was having an extra marital affair and strangled her to death. Mayure later surrendered before the police, following which he was arrested and an FIR of murder was registered against him by Bhandup police.
Mayure worked as a labour contractor and the couple got married a year ago, said the police. An officer from Bhandup police station said Mayure often suspected that his wife was involved with a man from the neighbourhood.
“Around 8.30 am on Wednesday, when Shivani kept getting calls on her mobile, Mayure asked her who was the caller. While she said it was a woman, Mayure answered the call and heard a man’s voice on the other side. This infuriated him and they had a fight,” the officer said. “Mayure ended up strangulating his wife with a nylon rope used for drying clothes.”
He then locked up the house and fled. The police said he roamed Kanjurmarg area through the day and surrendered before Parksite police station in Vikhroli (west), which informed Bhandup police. Senior Inspector Ramesh Khade, Bhandup police station, said: “We have registered a case of murder and arrested Mayure. He is in police custody.”
