I want to thank everyone from Grand Masti for their hard work. I never thought I would win this award,” said Riteish Deshmukh, poker-faced amidst roars of laughter from the audience. The actor was on stage to receive the Ghanta award for the category ‘That’s Anything But Sexy’ won for every scene of his movie Grand Masti.
The awards — in their fourth edition — hosted by stand-up comics from the group The East India Comedy, were a celebration of the worst in Bollywood and ran to a packed house at JW Marriott in Juhu on Friday evening. Deshmukh got a standing ovation for being a sport and even posed with his golden ‘ghanta’ trophy for the cameras.
A jury comprising film critics Rajeev Masand, Sudhish Kamath, Aniruddha Guha, Rahul Desai, Naomi Datta and founder of the popular web-comic The Vigil Idiot, Sahil Rizwan, selected films that were the best of the worst in Bollywood from last year. The winners were selected by audience voting.
Actor Arshad Warsi with wife Maria Goretti, Kunal Kapoor, Mini Mathur, Archana Puran Singh with her filmmaker husband Parmeet Sethi were among those who attended the show. Comedians Sorabh Pant, Kunal Rao, Sahil Shah, Sapan Verma and Azeem Banatwalla kept the audience in splits throughout the three-hour show.
The evening was a laugh riot as the comics announced the winners: Himmatwala won the Worst Film and its director Sajid Khan was awarded the Worst Director. Priyanka Chopra (Zanjeer) and Prateik Babbar (Issaq) were selected as the Worst Actors of the year. ‘Aamir-Aamir-Katrina’ were voted Worst Couple for Dhoom 3.
Other fun categories that had the crowd rolling with laughter were: ‘Shit Nobody Saw’ for the almost-unheard-of Sona Spa, ‘Kouting Krap With Karan’ — Salman Khan won this for his famous ‘I am a virgin’ statement on the talk show Koffee with Karan — and Worst Rip-Off/Remake, won by Krrish 3.
