A 25-year-old man from Kozhikode was arrested by the Sahar police for allegedly creating ruckus, manhandling crew members and abusing co-passengers in a Bahrain bound flight on Saturday. Police said that the flight from Kozhikode to Bahrain had to be diverted to Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport due to his unruly behaviour.
According to police, the accused Abdul Musavvir Nadukkandiyil who was travelling to Bahrain for work was arrested on the complaint of Om Deshmukh, an associate security in the Air India Express Limited.
In his complaint, Deshmukh said when he was on duty at 12.52 pm when he received a message on the WhatsApp group that flight IX 473 CCJ – Bahrain was “diverted due to an unruly guest”. The flight then made a landing at 1.30pm at Mumbai airport, following which the senior cabin crew handed over the passenger to him and informed that he was travelling from Kozhikode to Bahrain.
An officer from Sahar police station said, “The flight took off from Kozhikode at about 10.10 am and around noon, the passenger got up from his seat and went to the rear door of the aircraft. He pushed the crew and tried to open the rear door of the flight.” “The cabin crew of the plane forbade him to do so and took him to his seat saying that his actions could endanger the lives of the passengers travelling in the plane,” read the statement of the complainant. Nadukkandiyil also verbally abused the co-passengers seated around him as he even manhandled them. “He also threatened to open the rear door again, getting up from his seat and going towards the door,” said an officer.
After the crew realised that his presence could be a threat to the aircraft and other passengers, the pilot made a landing in Mumbai. Nadukkandiyil was deboarded from the flight and his passport, boarding pass, mobile phone and a hand bag was handed over to the complainant, who then took him to Mumbai’s Sahar police station. A senior police officer said, “After a complaint was lodged at our police station, a case was registered under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and Aircraft Act and the passenger was arrested.”
Emergency at airport In another instance, full emergency was declared when a Mumbai-bound flight from Paris landed at the Mumbai airport on Sunday morning after the crew on board received a handwritten bomb threat on an air sickness bag in the flight. The flight had 306 persons on board, including 12 crew members. Officials said that a security concern was noted by the crew while onboard, following which a full emergency was declared at 10.08 am on Sunday and the flight landed at 10.19 am.
