City colleges declared the third merit list for admissions to the first year in Bachelor degree courses, on Thursday. The most popular colleges saw only a marginal dip in cut-off scores, indicating fewer vacancies. However, there was no third merit list for some courses, as they are full.
The city’s most popular college, St Xavier’s, did not declare the third merit list for any course. Principal of the college, Dr Rajendra Shinde, said, “There is no third list because all seats are full.” The traditional Bachelor of Arts (BA), which is the most sought after course at this South Mumbai college, had closed admissions at 91.83 per cent in the second merit list declared last week. The first merit list for this course had closed at 92.17 per cent.
At Ramnarain Ruia college, there was no third merit list for the BSc and Biochemistry. For other courses too, the third merit list cut-off at this college dropped marginally from that of the second merit list (see box). At Jai Hind college too, its popular BA course closed admission at 91 per cent in the third merit list which is a marginal drop from 92 per cent from the second merit list.
“A marginal drop in the cut-off indicates that seats are getting filled. In this case, chances of more merit lists are less. However, it is too early to predict matters, as we expect some movement in admissions after the third merit list. Some students may withdraw admission from one place to confirm at another college,” said Dr Shobna Vasudevan, principal of RA Podar College, where its flagship course of Bcom closed admissions at 93.25 per cent, in the third merit list. The cut-off score for the same course was 94.33 per cent in the second merit list.
As most city colleges are seen filling seats by the end of the third merit list, Dr Pooja Ramchandani, principal of HR College, said, “We may have another list, only for a handful of seats, as some students may hop to other colleges after the third merit list. Additionally, students from the in-house quota may switch colleges if they manage to get a preferred seat.”
In-house admissions are for those students who have passed Class 12 from the same college. As these students are given preference in admissions to Bachelor courses with a separate merit list; most of them confirm admissions on allotted seats, until they get a better deal through regular merit lists.
