The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has served a notice on the Aurangabad district Congress headquarters,Gandhi Bhavan,for not paying property tax for around two decades. Responding to the notice,Gandhi Bhavan has paid around Rs 2 lakh and assured the AMC that the rest of the dues will be paid in a few days.
As per AMC records,Gandhi Bhavan has not paid property tax for 18 years,the last amount being paid in 1992. The dues had risen to Rs 2.97 lakh.
Ajay Charthankar,AMC assessor and collector of tax,said the district chief of the party was supposed to pay the tax. He said party district chief Keshavrao Autade was unaware of the amount due when the corporation recovery squad met him to serve the notice. However,Autade assured the squad that he would pay the amount at the earliest,said Charthankar.
When contacted,former standing committee chairman of the AMC and Congress leader Abdul Sajed Abdul Sattar said,Gandhi Bhavan is a complex surrounded by 14 shops. The agreement between the tenants (shopkeepers) and Gandhi Bhavan mentions that they should pay water and property tax and the electricity bill.
He said the outstanding amount to be paid by the Gandhi Bhavan was only Rs 9,000 and rest should be borne by the tenants. However,Gandhi Bhavan paid around Rs 2 lakh after receiving the notice. The rest will be paid on Wednesday,he added.
Meanwhile,AMC commissioner Dr Puroshottam Bhapkar has initiated a drive to recover water bills and property taxes. Special teams have been formed and around four employees suspended for failing to recover taxes.
