Around 150 colleges affiliated to the Mumbai University (MU) have been pulled up for non-settlement of accounts of grants received from the University Grants Commission (UGC) under various schemes and submitting audit reports to them. Taking cognisance of the default, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and the UGC have called for a meeting at the UGC’s Western Regional Office (WRO) in Pune from the second week of September.
These 150 colleges affiliated to the MU have been pulled up for failing to settle the accounts of financial assistance and grants they had received from the UGC during the IX, X and XI plans. The UGC has issued a 17-page notice through the university. Some of the top colleges in the city are guilty of not submitting details.
The colleges have been asked to submit the details in the special interface meeting to be conducted in Pune between September 9 and September 11 and from September 14 to September 16.

In one of the notices to MU, by UGC’s Joint Secretary, Pune, Dr Devendra Kawday states: “It is observed that a large number of colleges affiliated to your university have not settled the accounts of grants received. Non-settlement of accounts has been viewed very seriously by the UGC and the MHRD. Therefore, it has decided to take up the issue of settlement of previous plan accounts on top priority.”

College for Women, D G Ruparel college, Ramnarian Ruia College, Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Maharashtra College, Mulund College of Commerce and
Akbar Peerbhoy College, LTMG college and General Hospital among others.
Apart from the unsettled amounts that run into crores for some, the UGC WRO has also given a schedule of the meeting by when the colleges have to submit the details.
The concerned college officials will have to be present on the given date and time to submit the details. Warning the colleges of dire consequences Kawday said, “No further grants will be released to the colleges under various schemes till the accounts of previous plans are settled.”
The various schemes under which the grants have been released range from research, infrastructure development and potential for excellence through upgradation of facilities and improvement of research environment.
