Arjun Haware, who was driving the luxury car owned by Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule’s son Sanket which hit several vehicles in the early hours of Monday in Nagpur, was prima facie under the influence of alcohol, said police.
The police have sent his blood samples for forensic tests to confirm it. Haware was arrested soon after the incident and released on bail immediately as it was a bailable offence.
DCP Rahul Madane told The Indian Express, “Soon after the incident the driver was taken to the hospital, where the doctor said prima facie he was under the influence of alcohol. We have sent his blood samples for testing to confirm if there was presence of alcohol.” The officer said Haware was arrested and released on bail and further probe is on in the case.
Madane further said there were three persons in the car — Haware, Sanket and one Ronit Chittamwar, and that they have recorded the statements of Sanket and Chittamwar in connection with the case.
In the incident that took place around 1 am on Monday, the Audi first collided with complainant Jitendra Sonkamble’s car and then with a moped, leaving two youth riding it injured.
The Audi then struck some more vehicles moving towards Mankapur area following which occupants of a car chased down the trio and were taken to the local police station. The police said the passengers in the Audi were returning from a beer bar in Dharampeth when the incident took place.
The opposition criticised Bawankule and said that efforts were made to cover up the incident. Bawankule told media persons that police should conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the accident without any bias.
