Mumbai Police have seized the pair of shoes the accused Mohamed Shariful Islam was wearing at the time of making an alleged failed robbery attempt at actor Saif Ali Khan.
Police sources have said the investigators have seized a pair of shoes that Islam had dumped while running away from the police. The shoes, police believe, could become a piece of evidence for them.
It is to be noted that on January 16, when Islam had entered the Satguru Sharan building and was heading to the actor’s house, he was captured in a CCTV going up barefoot to ensure that it’s sound did not alert anyone. But, after allegedly committing the crime, he was seen escaping in shoes.
After allegedly attacking Saif six times with a knife, Islam went to Bandra, slept over in a garden near National College and then went Dadar using a local train from Bandra railway station.
In some of the CCTVs that the police have managed to retrieve, Islam is also seen wearing similar shoes.
Meanwhile, a team of Mumbai Police has also gone to West Bengal’s Nadia district to find more details of Islam’s stay there and who helped him get a sim card illegally.
A preliminary police probe has found that the SIM card being used by the accused was registered in the name of ‘Khukumoni Jahangir Sekh’ from Nadia district of West Bengal, whose Aadhaar card he is suspected to have used to procure it, police sources said. After crossing a river to illegally enter India, Shariful Islam is suspected to have travelled across a few districts in West Bengal for a few days. He tried to make an Aadhaar card but failed to do so, said sources.
Senior police officers overseeing the investigations did not respond to queries.
Islam was arrested on January 19 from Thane’s labour camp area. He is accused of attacking Khan during a failed robbery attempt on January 16. Khan had to undergo surgery as part of his treatment. The accused is currently in police custody till January 29.
