Sharpening its attack on the BJP and its leadership, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said the party was weakening democratic institutions and trying to take control of the judiciary.

BJP is trying to control the judiciary. His (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) friend (Benjamin Netanyahu) tried to do the same but people of Israel hit the streets and were joined by police, government officials and even foreign embassies. The PM had to retreat. This is democracy. Voters must take control of the PM here too,” Thackeray said, speaking at the first joint rally of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) after the alliance lost power, at Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar in Maharashtra.

Thackeray also targeted Modi over the ‘Hindu Jan Aakrosh Morcha’ rallies across the state. Speaking on the rallies where speakers attack minorities, invoke “love jihad”, “land jihad”, and call for the economic boycott of the Muslim community, Thackeray said, “Hindu Jan Aakrosh rallies are being organised in Maharashtra. But what is the use of that almighty leader ruling India, if Hindus have to take out rallies on the street.”

Thackeray took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his degree and asked which type of degree he holds that he can’t show it to anyone and those seeking its copy are getting penalised.

He also slammed the government over disqualification of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and said that Rahul has been disqualified for raising questions on the Hindenburg Report.

The rally was attended by NCP leaders Ajit Pawar, Jayant Patil and Jitendra Awhad among others. Congress leader Balasaheb Throat and Ashok Chavan also attended the joint rally along with Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Aaditya Thackeray. NCP president Sharad Pawar and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Nana Patole did not attend the rally. The leaders of the three parties emphasised that the MVA will contest the elections together.

Calling for bringing down the BJP, Thackeray also said that while the Shiv Sena helped the BJP grow in Maharashtra, “they have robbed us of our party name, symbol and even my father. Now it is time to bring down the BJP. I dare the BJP to come to Maharashtra and contest in Modi’s name and let’s see who wins,” he challenged.
