Half the jobs in the BMC’s pay-and-park lots will be reserved for women, and a quarter for local unemployed youths.

Half the jobs in the BMC’s pay-and-park lots will be reserved for women, and a quarter for local unemployed youths.

After months of arguments between political parties and the civic administration,BMC group leaders finally decided on a reservation formula on Thursday, after corporators of the opposition (Congress and NCP) had walked out of the general body meeting.

“The administration was trying to favour private contractors by giving them a major chunk of the jobs. We will not let this happen and we have made sure the common man benefits,” BJP corporator Ashish Shelar said.

With 50 per cent of the jobs for women and 25 per cent for local unemployed youth, candidates chosen by contractors will be left with only 25 per cent.

Last December, political parties had unanimously opposed a move, against their advice,to tender 84 of the city’s 113 pay-and-park lots without reserving the jobs for locals and women self-help groups.

Corporators were also opposed to handing over more than one parking lot to one contractor. “It creates a monopoly. We have asked the administration to involve more firms with one parking lot per firm,” Mayor Shraddha Jadhav said.
