Two days after Shiv Sena corporator Sanjay Agaldare allegedly attacked assistant engineer Mahesh Pawar of the BMC’s water department, municipal workers in the G/South office and municipal engineers went on a strike to protest against the repeated attacks on them. Representatives of the Municipal Engineers’ Association (MEA) on Monday met municipal commissioner Swadheen Kshatriya and urged him to provide extra security to municipal engineers and workers.

The MEA demanded that a law similar to the one that covers municipal doctors be created to secure municipal engineers and workers under which the miscreants can be booked. It has also asked the BMC to remove Agaldare from the post of corporator and demanded police action against him at the earliest.

“We have also urged the civic body to ask the police to deploy cops outside all municipal ward offices,” said Sainath Rajadyaksha, general secretary of the MEA.

This was the third such attack against the engineers of the water department in the past two months. In November 2009,Sena activists led by Tukaram Kate had allegedly vandalised the office of the BMC’s hydraulic engineer. In December, activists of Swabhimaan had attacked an engineer of the water department in the K-east ward office and blackened his face.
