Cab driver jumps off sea link, dies; police suspect losses in online gaming

Police's preliminary investigation revealed that Hussain was into online gaming apps and it is suspected that he incurred huge losses.

A 35-year-old app-based cab driver allegedly jumped from Bandra-Worli-Sea-Link early Friday. The driver left his mobile phone inside his vehicle, through which the police managed to reach out to his brother and informed him about the incident.

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Altaf Mohamed Hussain, a native of Uttar Pradesh. He stayed with his brothers in Mumbai’s Govandi area, said police.

Police’s preliminary investigation revealed that Hussain was into online gaming apps and it is suspected that he incurred huge losses. “Our team is probing to ascertain the exact reason,” a senior police officer said.

Around 1am on Friday, the Worli police received information that a person had stopped his vehicle between poll number 83 and 84 on the Bandra Worli Sea Link and jumped into the sea.

Soon after the message, a patrolling team of the Worli police was diverted to the Sea Link while two teams of the fire brigade from Worli and Bandra were also roped in for the search operation.

“We conducted searches in the sea with the help of torches but we could not locate the person,” an officer said.

In an attempt to identify the person, a police team inspected the vehicle, during which they found his mobile phone and the documents of the cab. “His phone was not locked due to which we managed to get his brother’s number and reached out to him. He came to the Sea Link after we informed him about the incident,” added the officer.

Later, around7.30am on Friday, the Worli police said Hussain’s remains were found near Worli Fort. “It comes under the jurisdiction of Dadar police station. As we had sent a wireless message, our counterparts in Dadar informed us that they traced Hussain’s body,” said an officer.

Hussain was identified with the help of his brother, following which he was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead. After conducting the post-mortem, his remains were handed over to the family.

The Worli police registered a case of accidental death report and are probing the matter. “We are checking whether Hussain was being harassed by anyone after losing money on online gaming,” said an investigator.
