The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai crime branch arrested a 48-year-old man from Masjid area in South Mumbai on Saturday with eight kilograms of high-quality charas (Hashish) worth Rs 2.40 crore. The arrested accused has been identified as Hussain Abdullah Shirgaonkar (48), who is a resident of Mumbra in Thane district. ANC Worli unit officials received input from their informers that a suspect was coming to the Reti Bunder area to supply drugs. When ANC officials reached the spot, they detained a “person moving suspiciously” in the Yusuf Meher Ali Marg area of Masjid. When searched, eight kilos of charas were found in his bag. The said drugs are worth Rs 2.40 crore, the ANC said. Shirgaonkar lives in Mumbra with his wife and a child and has no previous criminal record. It is said that he recently left his wine shop salesman job and tried to make some quick money, said an ANC source. Shirgaonkar was subsequently arrested under the Narcotics, Drugs, and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He was produced before the court and remanded to police custody until November 8. The ANC officials are looking for the associates of Shirgaonkar.
