THE MUMBAI crime branch, investigating the case of fraudsters posing as Unani doctors, have registered another FIR in a case where a man lost Rs 50 lakh, taking the total number of FIRs registered in the case to four, including one registered in 2021.

According to police, in the latest case, four persons approached a 63-year-old woman whose husband lost vision after an epilepsy attack. In October this year, when she was going along with her husband from Borivali to Pune, they stopped them at the Kharghar food mall. One of the accused, who introduced himself as Dr Patel, enquired about her husband’s condition and claimed that he could cure him by sucking out infected blood.

He gained the woman’s trust by sucking blood from her husband using a cylindrical device, after making cuts at some places. According to police, the accused stealthily kept multani mitti in his mouth and when he spat out the blood, it was yellow, which he said was the reason behind the man’s illness.

During the next few weeks, the accused took Rs 50 lakh from the woman and sucked out “infected blood” from her husband. Later when there was no improvement in her husband’s condition, the woman realised she had been cheated as the accused stopped answering his phone.

Earlier this month, when she read about an accused who cheated another senior citizen in a similar manner, she approached the crime branch that was investigating the case.

An officer from Unit III that is probing the case said, “While the modus operandi and names used by the accused are the same, the woman was shown the four accused arrested by us but she said they were not the ones. There are several such small gangs from Rajasthan that use the same modus operandi so we are looking for them.”

The officer added that they have found two more FIRs — one at Kalachowki and the other at Matunga — with the same modus operandi. They are probing those cases as well.
