Anand Paranjape wins Kalyan for Sena

Kalyan turned out to be the only saving grace for Shiv Sena in Thane, where party candidate Anand Paranjape defeated Vasant Dawkhare of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) by a margin of 24,000 votes.

Kalyan turned out to be the only saving grace for Shiv Sena in Thane, where party candidate Anand Paranjape defeated Vasant Dawkhare of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) by a margin of 24,000 votes. Paranjape’s father, the late Prakash Paranjape, had also defeated Dawkhare in the 2004 elections by the same margin.

Though Vaishali Darekar-Rane of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) could garner 1.02 lakh votes, she failed to make an impact on the Sena prospects as elsewhere in the state.

“We were expected to win in Kalyan as it is a Sena-BJP stronghold. We will have to take cognisance of the growing presence of MNS in the region. I owe my victory to the efforts of party workers,” Paranjape said.

Dawkhare’s defeat has come as a shocker for the NCP as the veteran leader had a clear headstart against Paranjape, whose candidature was announced at the eleventh hour. Paranjape and the Thane Sena leadership had invested their time and efforts in Thane seat believing that he will be contesting in the constituency. However, when Dawkhare’s candidature was announced from Kalyan,Uddhav Thackeray’s personal assistant Milind Narvekar took an adamant stand to field Paranjape from Kalyan. The Sena won Kalyan, but lost Thane to the NCP.
