Hours after the agitation to demand reservation for the Maratha community turned violent in Maharashtra, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Hingoli in the Marathwada region was set on fire by unidentified persons late on Monday.
According to BJP officials, two to three unknown persons walked into the party office and set it on fire before fleeing. The security guard and police immediately took action and doused the fire late Monday, they said.
There was nobody inside the office except the security guard and police personnel.
According to primary information, it was part of the ongoing protests carried out in support of the Maratha reservation.
On Monday, houses of NCP MLAs Prakash Solunke of Majalgaon and Sandeep Kshirsagar in Beed district were set on fire. Solunke is with the Ajit Pawar-led NCP and Kshirsagar belongs to the party led by Sharad Pawar.
Protesters indulged in arson and vandalism as they targeted a municipal council building earlier in the day. They also vandalised the office of a BJP MLA in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, and pelted stones at state-run buses as they blocked highways in other parts of the Marathwada region.
After the violence, authorities imposed a curfew in the Beed district, and on Tuesday prohibitory orders were clamped in Dharashi district as well. They also stepped security at the houses of MLAs, MPs, and ministers as well as offices of political parties across Maharashtra.
