Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar Wednesday held a review meeting on the proposed Revas-Reddi coastal road project of the Konkan region.

During the meeting, Pawar instructed the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) to promptly issue the vertical clearance for constructing a bridge across Dharamatar and Bankot creeks as a part of this proposed project.

“For the want of a clearance certificate from the MMB, the work of the proposed project is lagging behind,” the Deputy CM’s office later pointed out in a statement.

Pawar emphasised the need to expedite this coastal road project enroute from Revas in Raigad district to Reddi in Sindhudurg district, which holds significance in bringing holistic development of Konkan region, especially in bolstering tourism.

The review meeting, held at Pawar’s office, was attended by MP Sunil Tatkare and key officials such as Additional Chief Secretary of Public Works Department Manisha Mhaiskar, Principal Secretary of Home (Ports) Department Parag Jain, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Radheshyam Mopalwar, Chief Executive Officer of Maharashtra Maritime Board Dr Manik Gursal and Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Joint Managing Director Anil Gaikwad.

The project has been delayed for over four decades and the final project design was approved in March 2022 as a pivotal step towards expediting the highway’s progress.

Additionally, an administrative clearance has been granted for constructing the Dharamtar creek bridge, estimated at Rs 3,570 crore, linking Revas and Karanja creeks.

“However, the pending clearance from the Maritime Board for the bridge’s navigation specifications has halted further tender processes,” the Deputy CM’s office said.

The Maharashtra Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is the nodal agency appointed by the state government for the coastal road project. The MSRDC is actively engaged in surveying and preparing a detailed project report (DPR) of the proposed project alignment.

Maharashtra has a coastline of 720 km and there are 14 minor ports and two major ports on the coastline.

The proposed Revas-Reddi Coastal Road is planned on the lines of the California coastline. The project will promote tourism-related activities.
