After the unusual dry heat experienced by Mumbaikars during the second half of March,April has started on a relatively cooler note.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD),the Colaba weather station recorded a maximum of 32.7° Celsius and a minimum of 23.2°Celsius on Monday. The suburban Santacruz weather station recorded a maximum of 31.7 °Celsius and a minimum of
21 °Celsius . As per IMD data, the average maximum temperature recorded since April 1 is 31.2°Celsius in the suburbs.
The sea breeze helps bring down the temperature. The sea breeze is setting in at the normal hours from 11:30 am to 12,leading to a decrease in the maximum temperature compared to last month, said V K Rajeev Director of IMD (Western Region). The IMD has predicted a maximum temperature of 32°Celsius and a minimum of 22 °Celsius for the next two days.
“Anything less than 10 days is not enough to understand a trend. The city is experiencing the changeover from north-easterly to westerly winds. With moisture in the air,the days do not feel as hot as last month.”
Mumbai experienced its hottest day in March in decades last month. The temperature in Mumbai rose to 41.6 °Celsius(Santacruz weather station) which was just just a little below 41.7°Celsius recorded in March 1956. The temperature in South Mumbai also broke old records as mercury levels touched 41.3°Celsius compared to a record high of 41.4°Celsius in 1981 at Colaba weather station.
