No rainfall in the catchment area has once again resulted in a dip in the levels in all the six lakes that supply water to the city. In the second half of July,the Modak Sagar lake gave a cause for cheer to the BMC as it neared the overflowing mark. But in the last ten days,the rainfall in the catchment areas has been minimal,below 10 mm daily or no showers at all. On Monday,the Modaksagar lake level was 162.80 metres,below its full supply of 163.15 metres. Other lakes (see box) are also far below from their maximum level. Officials from the water department said they were expecting the situation to improve by September. As on September 30,all the lakes should be at their full supply so that the water storage of 13 lakh million litres will be sufficient for the next year, said an official. The civic administration is gearing to carry the cloud seeding experiment to induce artificial rainfall in Modaksagar catchment area by August 15. Permissions are being sought from the civil aviation department and tower is being set up to install radar to forecast cloud and weather situations.
