Observing there is a countrywide movement against corruption, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday asked Municipal Commissioner Subodh Kumar to file an affidavit stating what measures has he taken to get rid of corruption in the corporation.

The court was hearing a petition filed by HCL Infosystems, which claimed it had paid Rs 5 crore to the corporation as octroi duty. However, despite the payment, they were sent a notice stating the money was never received by the BMC.

The BMC informed the court the money was paid by the company to corrupt officials at Mulund check post and it was not deposited to the civic body’s treasury. The court said,“There is a countrywide movement to eradicate corruption. People should realise it is in the interest of the country to not pay bribes.”
