The demolition work being carried out by the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) at the Airports Authority of India (AAI) Colony has irked the residents. On Monday, residents of building B-24 of the colony forced the demolition work to stop after building B-25,which shares a common foundation with B 24,tilted. Residents have also complained of constant noise and dust due to the work. On Monday their crane directly hit the first floor of B-25 and the building tilted towards the other side. We got very scared and later our union representatives got the work stopped, said a resident of B-24 who did not wish to be named. The colony residents also informed the Sahar police whose officers inspected the site on Monday evening. All the buildings that are coming in way of the Sahar elevated road project are to be demolished. Colony residents complained of excessive noise and dust pollution. We asked MIAL to take care of persons residing in the area, said senior police inspector Dilip Patil of Sahar police. According to a resident, five MIAL representatives visited the area on Wednesday and said they would take care of the maintenance work of the affected buildings. They should have used spanners to break the building and not such heavy machines that cause vibrations. There are children and old people whose health is affected, said Pramod Choprekar,a member of the Airports Authority Employees Union. However,a MIAL spokesperson denied the charges. We have demolished 11 buildings and there have been no problems. There is no danger to the existing buildings. The HR directors of MIAL and AAI had visited the colony and everything is fine, the spokesperson said. They spray water to curb dust pollution at the airport construction site but they dont use water here, added Choprekar.
