A year on,Adarsh station scheme yet to take off in city

The Adarsh station scheme announced by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee last year is yet to take off in Mumbai.

The Adarsh station scheme announced by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee last year is yet to take off in Mumbai. As many as 35 railway stations on the Mumbai suburban section were supposed to be renovated as per the scheme. The railways had a plan to improve the condition of FOBs,paint stations, install steel seats.

According to commuters, indicators at Curry Road and King Circle stations stop functioning after 8 pm. They say that Curry Road station does not have toilets for ladies and there is a need to have another (south end) FOB at the Nahur station. “The ladies toilet at Andheri station is not up to the mark and does not suit the specifications of an Adarsh station,” said a commuter.

“These stations are truly not ideal. Stations between Thane and Belapur (Vashi,Turbhe and Sanpada) need more amenities and more security cover,” said Ramchandra Karve of Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh.

“Under this scheme,we have undertaken work which costs around Rs 9 crore. At Naigaum,Bandra,Charni Road and Goregoan,we have started work to improve the condition of platforms. Similarly,FOBs at many stations are being constructed,” said WR chief spokesperson Shyam Sunder Gupta.

“We hope to complete all the work by March 31.”

“At the Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar station,we have built a toilet with modern amenities. We are replicating the same model in other stations of the CR,” said Shriniwas Mudgerikar, chief spokesperson for the Central Railway.

Railway officials are expecting more funds under the Phase II of MUTP. In the last budget, the state government had asked Banerjee to include the 12-coach train project on harbour line, which was not considered. This year, however, with the state government pushing hard for the project,it is expected to be included in the Phase II.

But city commuters expect something more from the railways. “Mumbai would get little in terms of train services. Funding is expected as the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (Phase II) has been sanctioned. Unless the projects are completed, services cannot be increased,” said a senior railway official.

“We can expect improvement in the condition of (suburban) station, but even this would not be specific.”
