8 booked over bid to fly illegally to London posing as professor, students

Eight people, including three minors, were booked over an alleged attempt to fly to United Kingdom using bogus documents from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, police said Tuesday.

The accused allegedly posed as professor and students from an university in Haryana’s Hisar and were trying to fly to London under the pretext of attending Student Exchange Programme in UK.

According to the Sahar police, on Monday, security officials at the airport first nabbed two passengers on suspicion at the boarding pass counter.

While questioning, they claimed to be a student and professor from a Haryana-based university but could not provide any documents or relevant information that could substantiate their claims, the complainant immigration officer stated in the FIR.

During further inquiry, they revealed that a group of eight people were scheduled to fly to London by flights SV-773 and SV-119 via Jeddah. After this others were detained too at the airport.

The detained passengers are residents of Haryana and Punjab and three of them are minors. Their parents have been informed about the police action and called to come to Mumbai.

Police said that an agent named Bittu was assisting the accused in illegally flying abroad.
Bittu met them all at a hotel in Delhi and prepared the plan to send them abroad in the name of attending a Student Exchange Programme in London by posing as professor and students from Om Sterling Global University, police said adding that Bittu allegedly managed to secure Visit VISA from UK consulate.

Bittu was charging Rs 20 lakh each from the accused passengers, the police said.
Bittu introduced them to one Vijender Singh, who took them all from Delhi to Mumbai.
Police booked the accused under sections 12 of Passports Act and sections 143, 318(4), 336(2), 336(3), 340(2) of Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). The case has transferred to the Mumbai Crime branch for further investigation.
