65-year-old man dies in fire at Santacruz residential building

A 65-year-old man was killed in a fire that broke out in the ground-plus-six storey Haripreet building situated in Santacruz West’s Tagore Road on Tuesday afternoon.

During the course of the rescue operations, two more people who had been trapped within, were rescued alive by the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) forces.

The level-one fire was reported at 3.47 pm,  according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the fire remained confined to the sixth floor of the residential building, situated opposite Santacruz’s Podar School. Soon after the conflagration was reported, the MFB pressed four fire engines and other specialised machines into service.

The deceased has been identified as Nitesh Joshi (65), who was declared brought dead by the medical officers at Vile Parle’s civic-run Cooper Hospital.

Furthermore, two persons were rescued from the smoke logged sixth floor by the MFB officials.

The civic officials said that the firefighters accessed the spot of fire through the staircase and rescued the trapped persons by donning Breathing Apparatus Set (BA Set), a device used by rescue personnel to provide clean air to breathe in hazardous environments.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Ravindra Ambulgekar, Chief Fire Officer (CFO) said that the smoke-logging was very intensive. “Besides four fire engines, BA set as well as one mini fire tender were also used during the course of the rescue operations”, added Ambulgekar.

While one of the two trapped persons, who were rescued alive, was taken to Cooper hospital for treatment, the other sustained minor injuries and received care on the spot through the 108 ambulance service.
