6 killed, 5 injured as container hits taxi on Mumbai-Nashik highway

There were 11 occupants in the taxi at the time.

At least six persons were killed and five others were injured after a container carrying onions rammed a jeep on the Mumbai-Nashik highway near Padgha on Tuesday.

The police said that the incident took place at around 7 am following which the 35-year-old driver of the container was arrested. Police said the deceased were residents of Padgha and the incident took place when they were on their way to Khadavli railway station in a jeep.

Police inspector Sanjay Sable of Padgha police station said, “The container was transporting onions from Nashik to Nhava Sheva in Navi Mumbai. The driver of the container was speeding due to which he lost control of the vehicle and rammed the jeep.”

According to police, there were 11 people in the jeep at the time of the incident.

“The jeep driver took a sudden turn on the highway at Khadavli phata towards the station without noticing that a container was approaching them,” said a police officer adding, “The driver of the container identified as Shivshankar Prajapati (35) could not control the speed due to which there was a head on collision between them. The jeep was dragged for a few metres.”

Soon after the incident, police were informed following which teams were sent to the spot and the injured were rushed to the hospital. “Six persons were declared brought dead by doctors at the hospital,” said the police officer. Five others who are admitted in KEM and hospitals at Padgha and Bhiwandi are recuperating.
