The accused identified as Sanjyot Dhodke and Shubham Narayani, both 19-year-olds, later tried to pass it off as a gas leak accident by leaving the gas knob of the flat open before they fled.
The police received a call from Dreams society at Kamothe complaining of a gas smell emanating from a flat around 4am on January 1. The police team with the help of the fire brigade broke open the door and found the bodies of Jitendra Jaggi (45) and his mother Gita Jaggi (70) on the floor. The police sent the bodies to a hospital and suspected it could be due to a gas leak. An officer said Jaggi worked intermittently as a gig worker.
The post mortem report however indicated that they had been murdered following which a murder case was registered at the Kamothe police station and police began a probe in the matter. On questioning neighbours the police found that on New Year’s Eve, two youngsters Dhodke and Narayani, both college students from the locality had gone to Jaggi’s house. When the police went to their houses in the same area, the duo were missing, making the police suspicious.
The police then started a technical probe in the matter and found the duo from a ground in Ulwe and brought them in for questioning. During interrogation, the police said the duo told them that they murdered the mother-son duo after Jitendra had tried to force himself on them.
As per their version, they knew Jaggi as he came down to walk his dog in the area and so did they. Over a period of the past year, they came to know each other well and Jaggi invited them to his residence for a New Year’s Eve party. The duo reached his residence where they consumed alcohol. As per the accused, when Jaggi propositioned sexual intercourse to the duo, they got into a fight, following which Narayani hit him on the head with an extension board.
Due to the commotion, Jaggi’s mother had woken up, Dhodke then strangled her to death. The duo then took Jaggi’s mobile phone, tablet and other ornaments. They also left the gas knob in the flat open in order to portray it as an accident and fled from the spot. An officer said that they have arrested the duo in connection with the murder and will be producing them before the court for seeking their custody.
