A 33-year-old man was arrested while trying to exchange 10 counterfeit notes of Rs 2,000 at a private bank in Tardeo on Friday. The accused was caught by the bank officials after a note-counting machine detected the counterfeit notes.
The accused has been identified as Navid Ashfaq Shaikh, 33, a resident of Mumbra. Shaikh was working with a mobile store.
On May 19, the Reserve Bank of India had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes from circulation.
While the note continues to be legal tender, the RBI had said the existing notes can be deposited or exchanged in banks from May 23 to September 30, but set a limit of Rs 20,000 at a time. Following RBI guidelines, citizens are now visiting banks and exchanging their Rs 2,000 notes.
On Friday afternoon, the HDFC branch in Tardeo raised suspicion on a man, Navid Shaikh, who had deposited 10 notes of Rs 2,000 seeking exchange.
Shaikh had also filled the form and had submitted an Aadhaar card copy. The reason for banker’s suspicion was that the note-counting machine was not accepting the notes.
