In three separate cases, Customs officials seized drugs worth Rs 5 crore and recovered several animals, including meerkats and iguanas, at the Mumbai airport.

In three separate cases, Customs officials on Tuesday arrested three people who arrived at Mumbai airport from Bangkok and seized drugs worth Rs 5 crore and several exotic animals.
In the first case, Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officials at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport intercepted a passenger from Bangkok with 2.873 kg of cannabis hidden inside the checked-in trolley bag. The contraband has an illicit market value of approximately Rs 2.87 crore, officials said.
Another AIU team checked the baggage of a passenger who had arrived from Bangkok and recovered 2.339 kg of marijuana. Like the earlier case, the contraband was hidden inside his checked-in trolley bag and was worth Rs 2.33 crore, officials said.
Both passengers were arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. A Customs officer said that an investigation is on to ascertain if both passengers were being used by the same syndicate to smuggle drugs into the country. Their call data records are being verified, the officer added.
Acting on specific information, another AIU team checked the baggage of a passenger from Bangkok and found several animals, including three meerkats, three lizards, two iguanas, a skink, a four-eyed turtle, tarantulas and several tree crickets. The man was arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, and the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
