Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials arrested three Iranian nationals at the Mumbai airport Friday for allegedly smuggling 7 kg gold valued at Rs 6 crore from Dubai.
According to the Mumbai DRI, after getting a tip-off, the officials searched the three passengers upon which they recovered seven foreign-marked gold bars of 1 kg each and a cut piece of a foreign-marked gold bar concealed in waist bags hidden underneath the clothes of two of the passengers.
“The two passengers admitted to smuggling the gold as instructed by the third passenger, in exchange for monetary benefits. This confession was later corroborated by the third passenger, implicating them all in the illegal operation,” a DRI official said.
The officials further added that the total weight of the smuggled gold seized was 7.143 kg, valued at an estimated Rs. 6.28 crore. The gold was confiscated and all three passengers were arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
Further investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the smuggling network and whether more people were involved in the operation.
