The state government on Thursday shortlisted three sets of colours for replacing the black-and-yellow colour pattern of city taxis. The Cabinet will finalise the colour scheme in a month.
Transport Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil said the shortlisted colour schemes, submitted by the Arts College, included sky blue and yellow, brown and yellow stripes and reversal of the existing black-and-yellow combination with more prominence to yellow.
The unions were initially opposed to the colour change plan as the black-and-yellow pattern had become a part of the city culture. They were also not ready to bear the cost of the change. The government had then come up with the idea of inviting private parties to bear the cost and give advertising rights to them in return.
Vikhe-Patil said the government wanted to have global positioning system (GPS) in black-and-yellow taxis. The taxi drivers may not have to spend on it. We are looking for private partners in this project. A private tours and travels company wants to adopt 500 black-and-yellow taxis. They will install the GPS equipment.
