271 foreign students take admission to professional courses in state, institutions from Pune most popular

While the majority of students have chosen engineering branches, especially those related to computer science, artificial intelligence, and information technology, some of the foreign students have also taken admission to management and law courses.

As this admission cycle of this academic year is nearing completion, total of 271 foreign students, including Non-Resident Indians (NRI) have taken admission to various professional courses offered by colleges in Maharashtra, through the state’s Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell’s dedicated service for foreign students’ admissions.

As per data provided by the CET Cell, a total of 430 students from 52 countries and 682 NRIs registered on the portal for various course admissions conducted by the State CET Cell. Among these, the highest number of students—74—came from Nepal, followed by 72 from the United Arab Emirates. A significant number of applicants were also from Indonesia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. Although minimal, the registrations also included students from countries such as Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Argentina, and the UK.

However, eventually 271 students confirmed their admission into different programs across 17 institutions.

With most of them joining Pune based higher education institutions, the CET Cell data showed a clear trend of Pune being the preferred destination for higher education in Maharashtra for foreign students. With 68 admissions, College of Engineering Pune (COEP) has emerged as the most popular among these students. Other popular Pune institutions among foreign students include Vishwakarma Institute of Technology, Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Technology, ILS Law College, Cummins College of Engineering and Pimpri-Chinchwad College of Engineering among others.

In addition, institutions such as Walchand College of Engineering (Sangli) and VJTI (Mumbai) have also attracted students. An official from the Department of Higher and Technical Education stated, “We aim to continuously improve the quality of higher education institutions in the state and create a conducive environment for foreign students. Our efforts are focused not only on engineering but also on attracting students from abroad to other courses.”
