The Mumbai police on Thursday arrested 26-year-old Mohammed Riyaz Ansari for the rape of a five year-old girl in Antop Hill last week. Ansari is a resident of Tardeo and works in a garment shop in Wadala. On April 21, the 5-year-old went to a grocery shop in Antop Hill and she was allegedly picked up by the accused. After sifting through CCTV footage, police uncovered clips of a man talking to the child and then carrying her away in his arms. Police allege Ansari offered her chocolates, which she refused. Then, he carried her to a deserted stretch near her residence and allegedly raped her and left her by the road. The victim’s mother also named Ansari as a suspect as he had made advances on the minor before. The girl referred to the accused as ‘uncle’, implying that she knew him. “We picked him up for questioning as his description matched the sketch. His mobile location was on the spot of the incident at the time. He was known to the mother and the victim as they often visited his garment shop,” said police inspector police Sunil Kadam. “He will be held in police custody till May 6,” Kadam added. mumbai.newsline@expressindia.com
