Mumbai police Tuesday arrested a 25-year-old engineer from Gujarat over his alleged social media post about a “bomb” threat at the wedding of industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s son Anant Ambani.
The accused, identified as Viral Ashra, who is employed with an aircraft parts selling company, told police that he had no intention of triggering any panic or false alarm, and just shared his thoughts on the grand wedding of Anant Ambani with Radhika Merchant.
According to police, on July 13 night, an X user tagged Mumbai Police handle and informed them about a suspicious post posted by a user named @ffsfir.
Asra, who was allegedly using the handle @ffsfir, posted: “My mind is wondering shamelessly that half the world would go upside down tomorrow after a bomb went off at the Ambani wedding. trillions of dollars in one pin code ??”
The officials from the Mumbai police web development centre, following an SOP, informed all the senior police officials concerned about the “threat message” and the control room was informed too.
Though police anticipated it to be a hoax, they intensified security around the wedding venue, Jio World Convention Centre, Bandra-Kurla Complex as the wedding functions were attended by scores of celebrities from across the globe.
The wedding was held on July 12 and the Ambani family hosted a “Shubh Aashirwad” ceremony on July 13.
Meanwhile, teams of officials from Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) and cyber police station (south) initiated a probe and launched a hunt for the X user.
An FIR in connection with the threat message was registered by the south region cyber police station on Monday night.
Police located the IP address of the X account user and traced the accused in Gujarat’s Vadodara, an officer said.
The accused X user did not immediately delete his account but after news reports of his “threat” message emerged he discarded the account from the microblogging site, the officer added.
Ashra was produced before a city court that sent him to judicial custody.
