A 23-year-old man allegedly killed his father and grandfather and attempted to murder his uncle in Andheri (West) on Tuesday night. He later surrendered at the MIDC police station, handing over the knife used in the crime.
According to police, the accused, Chetan Bhatre, attacked his family members following a dispute over alleged ongoing harassment at home. His uncle, who sustained serious injuries to his jaw, is currently undergoing treatment at Nair Hospital.
The incident took place at Santoshi Mata chawl in Takshashila Society, MIDC. Bhatre lived there with his father Manoj Bhatre (54), grandfather Babu Bhatre (75), uncle Anil (50), elder sister, and a younger brother. Bhatre works as a delivery boy at a medical store, while his sister works at a call centre. His younger brother is in college.
“Due to his harassment, the accused’s mother left Mumbai and started staying at their native place,” said Ravindra Wani, senior inspector of MIDC police station.
Police said the incident occurred between 11pm and 11:45 pm when Manoj and Babu were on the ground floor. An argument broke out between them. Bhatre, who had returned home from work, asked them to stop.
“The father was under the influence of alcohol and started screaming and abusing him. Bhatre got angry and picked up a knife from the kitchen and attacked his father and later slit his throat,” a police officer said. “The grandfather tried to intervene but the accused could not control his anger and slit his throat too.”
Police said the uncle, who was outside at the time, tried to intervene but he too was attacked. “Bhatre ran amok, stabbed his uncle twice and fled the spot,” the officer said.
Bhatre then went to the MIDC police station and surrendered, carrying the blood-stained knife.
“A police team was sent to the crime scene and victims were rushed to the hospital where they were declared dead. A murder case was registered against the accused. He was arrested and produced in court on Wednesday and sent to police custody till September 26,” said Wani.
In his statement, Bhatre said his father, grandfather, and uncle had consumed alcohol and started arguing again. “He came home from his job around 10pm. His father was drunk and started screaming at him. He avoided it but it continued so he got upset,” said Wani.
Police said further investigation is underway.
