Actor Amrita Arora on Saturday deposed as a witness in a 2012 hotel brawl case, involving actor Saif Ali Khan and two others. Khan was present in court on Saturday.

In 2012, Arora, Khan and others were having dinner at a five-star restaurant in South Mumbai. A man, who was at the restaurant, got into a scuffle after an argument with them.

According to police, on February 2012, Iqbal Mir Sharma, a South African national and NRI, filed a complaint at Colaba police station against Khan, Arora’s husband Shakil Ladakh and their friend Bilal Amrohi, claiming that Khan had punched his nose, causing a fracture.

Arora told court that on February 21, 2012, she, along with a large group of friends, went to the restaurant for dinner. She said the restaurant staff gave the group a separate enclosure. She told the court that they were having a good time, when all of a sudden, a man barged into their enclosure. “…in a very loud aggressive voice, he told us to shut up and keep quiet,” Arora, the third witness in the case, told the court.

Arora said Khan stood up and apologised to man for having caused any nuisance to him. She said Khan also told the man that if he was done with his dinner, he was okay to leave. Arora said they went back to their dinner, unaware that the person was still outside the enclosure.

She told court that later on, when Khan went to the washroom, they heard some noise and recognised Khan’s voice. She said they saw the man who entered their enclosure punching and hitting Khan and there was a scuffle, which they rushed and stopped.

Arora further told court that the man was aggressive and abused all of them. “…He started saying aggressively that ‘you don’t know who I am, and what I am capable of,” she told court.

The prosecutor sought to declare Arora hostile, stating that she had not deposed as per her earlier statement to the police. However, the court said she had not resiled from her statement and if there were any arguments to be made against it, the prosecution could do at the time of the final hearing. The court directed the prosecution to summon the other witnesses, including the complainant.

The trial against Khan, Amrohi and Ladakh began in 2023. So far, three witnesses have been examined.
