The Maharashtra State Security Corporation (MSSC) conducted a special induction ceremony for 257 police personnel on Monday. The guards will formally take charge from January 1,with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) as their first set of clients.
The ceremony took place on Monday morning at the State Reserve Police grounds with a passing out parade.
Of the 257 police personnel,230 will be in-charge of the security at the five octroi hubs of BMC,and the rest will be entrusted with BSE security. The contract will last for 11 months and will be updated with time and need. The two contracts together have earned the corporation Rs 55 lakh, with Rs 18,000 being the minimum charge for the guard at the lowest rank.
The next stage of recruiting 1,300 guards and special police officers will also be done by mid-term next near. Financial institutions like RBI and SEBI have shown interest in the next phase of recruitment, according to officials.
We have given 80 security guards and special police personnel to the Mulund octroi hub as it sees a lot of trade. The rest are divided among the other five hubs. Our corporation will be responsible for protecting the consignments, the BMC staff and keeping a watch over the weigh bridge. The BMC has been getting complaints of theft and manhandling in these hubs resulting in losses, said MSSC vice-chairman and managing director P K Jain.
Though BSE has its own private security, along with SRP and local policemen,it was falling short of guards and asked for 27 guards from the corporation,Jain added. The corporation has maintained that it will take contracts only after area analysis and in areas which have good CCTV coverage.
The advantage of corporations security guards is that the act allows the special officer to detain a person and make a detailed report before handing over the suspect to the local police station. Besides, each security guard comes with background verification.
The other agencies, who have come forward for recruiting, include oil companies, state education department, banks and power corporations.
