The Latur police detained a 17-year-old boy for allegdly posting a “threatening” message with a picture of a gun, hand grenades and bullets on X,

The message referred to the India versus New Zealand cricket World Cup semi-final match played at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Latur Police Superitendent Somay Munde said that the police had called the minor along with his parents to the police station to enquire.

The boy told police that he is a big fan of Virat Kohli and Indian team and wrote the message on X in the context that the Indian team will make an explosive victory in the match on Wednesday.

“The boy wasn’t aware of the legal consequences of his act. After finding no terrorism related angle, he was given a warning and a notice and allowed to go home. A non-cognizable offence has been registered in the matter,” said Munde.

On Tuesday, officials at the Twitter cell of the Mumbai police informed their superiors about a suspicious-looking post.

“Kal hone wale match me aag laga denge,” the post said, along with a photo of a gun, bullets and grenades.

Following this, security arrangements at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium were ramped up on Wednesday .

Multi-layer security was implemented to ensure that no person enters the match venue with any suspicious objects, the police said.

Policemen in plain clothes were in the crowd to obtain ground-level input on any suspicious activities, the police added.

Combat teams like Quick Reaction Team (QRT) and Force One were also on standby.
