The Western Railway’s ambitious project to introduce a 15-car rake may come true in near future. On Thursday noon, the WR staff undertook a trial run of this rake from Mumbai Central to Virar.

Railway engineers were, however, reluctant to reveal the details about the plan.

“The Siemens company engineers and railway staff were present during trial run. They were given instructions by the WR,” said A K Malhotra,WR’s chief electrical engineer.

The 15-car rake,if introduced, will carry 30 per cent more commuters than the 12 car rakes. Railway officials said this train would halt at Mumbai Central,Dadar,Bandra,Andheri,Borivali and Virar.

But,the railway has to upgrade infrastructure facilities at stations also. For example, the length of platforms have to be increased. This cannot be done immediately as the WR has decided to halt the train at stations where long distance trains stop.

The railways are yet to decide on the date when the trains can be introduced. “This is just a trial run and we are yet to get a clearance certificate. Unless that happens,we will not be able to run the train for commuters,” said a senior WR official.
