1,300 teaching posts in engineering colleges, polytechnics to be filled this year

“In 2010, the 6th Pay Commission’s recommendations were implemented in the state. Subsequently, the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) said since new pay scales had been introduced, they would have to prepare new recruitment rules. These new rules were published by the state in 2012,” said a state government official.

The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) submitted a requisition to the state government to fill up these teaching posts. The state subsequently submitted the requirements to the MPSC. Currently, a requisition of around 1,280 posts has been made to the MPSC and advertisements were accordingly placed three months ago.

“The advertisements have been issued and a test will be conducted. As per the procedures, it will now take six months to fill up these regular teaching posts,” said the official.

There are 18 engineering colleges and around 60 polytechnics that are funded by the state government.

The colleges are meanwhile functioning with teachers employed on contract basis — 47 for engineering colleges and 493 for polytechnics. Further, principals also get faculty on hourly basis.

“There is a dearth of good quality faculty across all educational institutes. Further, for these engineering posts, the qualification is MTech and they mostly prefer a regular appointment. Hence, it is difficult to get faculty on contract. It is easier to get faculty for polytechnics as the required qualification is bachelor in engineering,” said the principal of an engineering college.
